Canterbury returns to 8:00 start time after popular demand

By Alastair Ostrowski

For too long, Canterbury has been pushing back the start time of the academic day. This path is on a crash course for disaster as a later start time gives students too much time in the morning and allows for students to get too much sleep, which is bad for teenagers. Luckily, this has been realized by those in the administration who have worked hard to correct this problem. After much deliberation, Student Life and the Academic Office have come to a new agreement on school start time; the new start of the academic day will be 8:00 am. This decision came after parsing through hours of sixth form exit interviews, end-of-the-year climate surveys, and an outpouring of student support for the idea. Student Life felt as though students had too much time on their hands in the morning. BT was quoted saying, “students get too much sleep, we need them to wake up tired for their first-period class so I don’t have to deal with all their energy.” The Academic Office was also keen on the 8:00 start time as it allowed for the reintroduction of one-hour class periods to be interspersed throughout the day. Mrs. Roberts said, “students have it too easy with the 45-minute blocks, it’s not enough time for teachers,” going on to say that “one-hour blocks are a much better alternative as they act as a semi-lab period which can be used exclusively for taking notes, and everyone knows that students love taking notes for one hour straight.” The entirety of the student population is enamored with the changes. Max said “I get too much sleep every night–I much prefer having to go to class at 8:00,” this sentiment was echoed by many, all of whom felt that they got too much restful sleep at Canterbury. The administration hopes that the new start time for the academic day will usher in a new age of academic excellence at Canterbury.
